Havening is a psychosensory technique designed to reduce emotional distress and enhance psychological well-being. It consists of soothing touch accompanied by distractions such as humming and singing, which together calm the emotional center of the brain by producing calming brain waves and chemical messengers, like serotonin and oxytocin. Havening can easily be taught to individuals and groups as a self-care method and it can also be done with a practitioner to help resolve individual traumas.

Humanitarian Havening is an initiative to take the healing effect of Havening to communities across the world that are in distress. Havening is a wonderful method for bringing global relief because it is easily taught and shared in groups and can be passed on to other families, groups, and communities so that its effect is exponential. It is simple, safe, and lasting. Most groups enjoy Havening greatly and enjoy experiencing it together.

It can be used with groups including but not limited to: non-governmental organizations, shelters, veterans associations, schools, refugee camps, prisons, grief groups, victims of natural and manmade disasters, hospice care, hospitals, and other community groups and organizations.

If you are already working with communities to provide relief, Havening is an easy add-on method for reducing distress and enhancing calmness. You can offer it while administering aid and resources. Our organization can train you to provide Havening, provide it ourselves, our both!

What makes Humanitarian Havening exceptional is not just the method, but the mission, to bring healing tools directly to the hands of people who need them most. Their partnership with us in Uganda is a testament to their commitment to community-based healing, global collaboration, and empowering people to take control of their emotional and psychological well-being.

Today, thanks to Humanitarian Havening, these tools are not just being used, they are transforming lives. From teachers finding better ways to connect with students, to teenage mothers regaining peace and purpose, to children in orphanages learning to self-soothe, this collaboration has left a lasting imprint on the hearts and minds of hundreds.

We are deeply grateful for the work of Humanitarian Havening and proud to be part of a movement that brings dignity, healing, and hope to where it is needed most.

If you’re looking to be part of real, impactful change, Humanitarian Havening is the organization to support. Their approach is simple, science-based, and scalable. But most of all, it is human.

In the heart of Nakivale Refugee Camp, where thousands face daily challenges such as trauma, anxiety, and emotional pain, our team introduced a powerful healing method called Humanitarian Havening. We began with small group sessions involving children, youth, and adults—many of whom were carrying heavy emotional burdens, feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and hopeless.

Through the gentle practice of Havening—using calming touch, soothing words, and creating a safe environment—we began to witness powerful changes. Children who were once withdrawn started smiling, singing, and opening up. Adults who had suffered silently began to share their stories, feel understood, and regain emotional strength.

One young girl shared, “Before, I never talked about my pain. But after Havening, I feel light—I feel free.    "Another adult participant revealed, “We were in emotional darkness. I personally tried to commit suicide many times because I felt completely isolated. But Havening gave us light and hope.”      What helped most was having a caring team of local volunteers, building community trust, creating safe spaces, and receiving support from partners who provided training and encouragement. As a result, trauma symptoms have decreased, people feel more connected, and many are now better able to cope with daily stress.

This work continues—and we believe Havening is more than just a technique. It has become a movement of healing, love, and empowerment in our community here in Nakivale.
